Phon Phisai is famous for the Naga Fireballs or Mekong Lights.  Glowing balls of fire erupt from the river high into the air.  They occur in late October around the night of Wan Ok Phansa at the end of the rainy season.  This is a good time to visit us for a painting and photography holiday.

Events

The Long Boat Races are a big event in Phon Phisai held after the Naga Festival in October each year

Loy Krathong is a time to forgive, forget and literally launch fresh hopes into the universe. Along with the related Yi Peng events up north, the festival is celebrated across Thailand with no shortage of booze and fireworks to accompany candlelit lanterns floating on water and in the sky. Observed on the full moon of the 12th lunar month,

Except in the big city department stores Thai people don't celebrate Christmas at all.  However the Thai New Year, Songkran on the 13th of April is a very important event.  Since Thailand has adopted a Western calendar the Western New Year is also important.  Local people have a big party and set off fireworks to see the New Year in along the banks of the Mekong River in Phon Phisai.  We usually go to the village and then back to the guesthouse where we set off fire lanterns to drift high over the river into Lao.
